As a powerful A Tier deck in Pokémon TCG Pocket, Charizard and Moltres EX deck are known for its high damage. With the right and efficient strategy, these two EX decks can allow you to use Crimson Storm for 2-3 turns in a row to defeat your opponent as quickly as possible. In this guide, we will talk about how you can build and effectively utilize these EX decks. Let’s get straight to it!
Let’s start with the deck composition and where to get all the necessary cards. There are a total of 8 actual Pokémon in the game, which are copies of Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, and Moltres EX. The only other cards on this deck that need to be obtained from card packs are a pair of Sabrina Trainer Cards. The rest of the cards are easily obtainable from Item Shop, including duplicates of Potion, X Speed, Poke Ball, Red Card, and Professor’s Research Cards.
One great thing about this deck is that all of the cards obtained from packs are in the same type of pack, Genetic Apex Charizard booster pack.
If you only open packs of this type, there’s a good chance you’ll get almost all of the cards you need for this deck through the initial free packs you get from completing all of the solo battles. If you do need to replace any duplicate pokemon you missed, try to choose basic pokemon with high HP and relatively low retreat costs.
Completing these battles and the various challenges they offer will provide Special Shop Tickets, which you can redeem for Pack Hourglasses to get more free packs.
Note that be sure to save up enough Shop Tickets to get the rest of the cards in this deck, as these cards will greatly help set up win conditions in a match, or otherwise interfere with your opponent’s ability to set up win conditions.
Also, while it’s great to get lucky and have the rarer, fancier versions of the cards in the deck, it’s not necessary as long as you can get the base versions of all of them. Of course, that’s not the case if you’re an avid card collector. It’s worth noting that getting enough Poké Gold through Pokémon TCG Pocket Top Up will allow you to get all of the cards in the shortest possible time.
With that out of the way, let’s get into actually using this deck and exploring the different possible win conditions. We’ll start with the best starting hands and strategies.
First, it’s OK to go first, but it’s OK to go second. Ideally, you’ll have at least one Moltres and one Charmander. In almost every situation, you want to have Moltres as your active Pokémon, but you can keep Charmander on the bench.
Also, the first game perfectly illustrates how even a good start can be instantly overturned if your opponent gets lucky.
For example, here your opponent plays a Misty card and gets lucky enough to start a heavy attack with Articuno EX’s Blizzard on the first turn. In this case, you have basically no chance of winning.
Going into the next game, it’s not an excellent start. First up is a Moltres, but there are no other basic cards to play. So you want to use Moltres’s Inferno Dance to change this situation, and quickly. Also, Moltres is an unusual Fire Type card because it is weak for Electric types, so in this game, get Moltres out of the game as soon as possible.
After your turn starts, if you don’t have a substitute Pokemon and don’t have a Pokemon in your hand that you can play, prepare a Professor’s Research Card, which allows you to draw two more cards.
Then, you can start building your Charizard EX. First, you want to infuse Moltres with Fire Energy, and then use Inferno Dance. This requires us to flip 3 coins, and for each heads you can put Fire Energy on a Fire Type Pokemon on the bench. This can allow us to quickly exceed the number of active energy tokens in our team, which is a major advantage of this deck type.
If you don’t complete this setup by the second or third turn, the battle will become a fairly hard battle and you will need to use other strategies.
Back to the game at hand. At this point, you want to develop Charmander into Charizard EX and continue to stack Fire Energy on it. You can do this by Moltres Inferno Dance while adding more Fire Energy to Moltres so that it can retreat or use Heat Blast attacks.
Of course, you can also speed up the process by adding one Fire Token you get each turn to Charmander outside of Inferno Dance. In short, your goal is to put all Fire Energy you can into Charmander and evolve it into Charizard EX, which is your win condition.
By turn 6, you already have Charizard EX and enough energy to use Crimson Storm. Doing this will consume 2 Fire Energy tokens, so make sure to stack extra Fire Energy as much as possible.
Since you can start using Crimson Storm at 5 Fire Energy, this means you will be able to add another Fire Energy to use Crimson Storm again in the next round.
This can cause problems if you need to defeat three enemy Pokémon to win the game. However, since usually the first Pokémon we defeat is EX, which gives 2 win points, we only need to defeat one Pokémon of any type after that to win the game.
All in all, unless your opponent is very lucky, or you are very unlucky, this deck will perform well in most situations. If you have any suggestions on how to improve this deck, please share them to help us optimize our deck-building strategy and get the ultimate victory. Have a nice day!
